Computers are common items in many households today as we are all using them more and more. Whether it is for surfing the internet checking your Facebook profile or whether for writing letters or keeping your accounts, they are not much good without good software. Software can be expensive which can be a problem. Some software you can get for free. Let me talk to you about Open Source Software.
Open Source software is free. It is called open source because the code that is used to write it is free to use and change yourself, however most of us are not interested in that part. There is lots of open source software which is free for various different the things but there is one particular piece of software that I want to talk to you about today.
Perhaps one of the most used pieces of software on many computers around the world, in business and home use is Microsoft Office. This is the suite of programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These
are commonly used programs both for business and education. The problem is, is that Microsoft (MS) Office can be expensive. Well this is where Open Office comes in.
Open Office is an open sourced (i.e. free) suite of programs that basically do exactly the same thing as MS Office. In fact it even looks very similar when you are using it. Containing a Word processor (like MS Word) and spreadsheet program (like Excel), presentation software (like PowerPiont) and even a graphics program it does everything that MS Office does, with the added bonus that it is completely free. It is also fully compatible with MS Office in that you can save files that you can read in MS Office (e.g. .doc, .xls and .ppt files) and it can read files that you may have created in MS Office too.
So why not save yourself a few pounds and download Open Office today, without having to fork out for an expensive Office suite of programs from Microsoft.
